Faces of people have been frozen in various popular photographs for decades. However, portrait photography isn\’t just about capturing a face; instead it is about making a person or a group of people come alive in a picture by depicting them in their splendour.
A good portrait photograph goes against the norm and is able to capture mental states and perspectives of the subject like never seen before. However, regular family or one-person portraits are also clicked and they are appropriate for family albums.
A proper close up bringing the individual\’s face into prominence distinguishes a truly professional portrait photograph from one that has been casually clicked. This can be attained by using a setting in the camera that makes the background slightly hazy and blurred so as to place the face more in focus. A camera with a wider aperture can achieve this ideal balance between the background and the foreground image. However, in some portraits where the individual needs to be seen as part of the background, particularly in photographs taken out in the open, a normal aperture serves the objective better.
Photography is all about falling of light into the photographic medium; therefore inadequate light has always been a photographer\’s cause of worry. However, some important photography tips if seriously followed can yield that ideal portrait photograph. One of the ways is to make the person sit close to the window such that the light entering from it falls on only part of the face. A reflective sheet can be used to light up the other side of the individual\’s face. However, portrait photography is best shot in studios as lights can be controlled there.
Another important factor that determines a good portrait photograph is the ease of the subject when he or she poses for the photograph. Technical wizardry in photography will yield results only when the person being photographed is comfortable and at ease, and displays his or her true self before the camera.
