Simple Tips On How To Use Joomla Templates
Monday, April 26th, 2010Joomla is a form of open source software licensed under General Public License. It is a type of software that anyone can use, if they so choose. An exceptional program makes building great looking websites as simple as possible.
The developers of Joomla create templates that can suit any website look that you need, some of these are offered for sale, but many of these templates are available to the user of Joomla free of charge. This article will give you a better understanding of how to use Joomla templates.
So, you’ve downloaded a free template from Joomla, and now you’re not sure what to do next. You simply can’t seem to figure out what to do with this thing. This means that the website which offered this free template download failed to inform you about its proper usage. Truthfully, it’s not difficult to install these templates for your website. When it comes to understanding how to use these templates, you have two methods available to you. This first method is generally easier to implement.
The first method on using Joomla templates requires you to have Joomla 1.5 or newer. Additionally the file you downloaded for your template needs to be a zip file, this is standard and you will not find many template files that are not zip files. There will be no need at all to unzip the file; the program will do all of this internally. With your Joomla interface, all you need to do is log in to the administrative interface; on the main menu, you will need to find the word “Extensions” and click on it.
This will bring you to a drop down menu, where you will find “Install/Uninstall.” Click on this and in just seconds a new page will appear. This is the “Extension Manager Page.” Then you click on the “Choose File” button. Once you locate the template file on your hard drive, all you need to do is click on a button named “Upload file & Install.” The upload is complete when you see “Install Template Success” on your screen. Once completed you can then go to the Template Manager to view and select your new template.
The next method on how to use Joomla templates is a bit more hands on and will require you use some sort of an FTP program. Using this method will require that you have the template file unzipped already, so you will need a type of program that can unzip files. After the file is unzipped, it will create another folder that has all of the files used by your template to work.
Once you’ve unzipped your template file, you’ll see a folder which contains the files which comprise your template. After the file is extracted, open up your FTP program and link it to your Joomla website. Find the ‘Templates’ folder using the FTP program’s interface within your Joomla website, and upload your unzipped template folder into this directory. This transfer may take a few moments. Once is has been completed, perform the same steps that were originally laid out and click over to the Template Manager, selecting this new template set.
Now, you should have a better understanding of using templates, and know how to use them to improve your own website.
