Vampires in the Buzz

It can be difficult not to notice that vampires are the next big thing. New television shows, pictures, and books with a theme of the undead are turning up everywhere, hoping to catch some of the after-splash of the Twilight phenomenon. To be honest, it kind of bothers me. I have been keen on vampires for over 10 years, usually due to my love of the cult-hit, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Therefore I realize vampires are sort of ( grrrrrr ) bad…evil….monsters! So it’s just a bit bit worrying seeing all these preteens dream about doing god knows what with a vampire ( asking R. Pattinson to bite them? ) and books that actually water down the parable making vampires these fluffy bunny creatures with bad teeth.

True Blood on HBO

All that aside, I have truly enjoyed the HBO drama True Blood. Like most HBO shows, it’s not afraid to push the boundaries, providing much enjoyment. The first season of the show follows the 1st book in Charlaine Harris’ vampire series, Dead till Dark. Since I liked the show, i decided to give it a read.

Exposition

For those unfamiliar with the show, it follows barmaid Sookie Stackhouse in the tiny northerly Louisiana city of Bon Temps. By some unusual happenstance, Sookie can read minds, apart from the mind of a certain vampire ( Bill ) who enters the tale expediently at the beginning of chapter one. In this world, vampires are out of the closet ( or coffin? ), so society knows they’re real.

The japanese discovered a strategy of making manmade blood so that vampires could feed without injuring the human-folk, making them in a position to live ‘mainstream. ‘ After that it is a classic story of boy saves girl, boy likes girl, boy puts girl at risk a lot, girl’s bro has a lot of sex….and people die.

Confessions Of A Real Blood Addict

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Prior to watching the hit HBO show “True Blood ” I had no understanding of the name Alan Ball. Clearly I was indifferent to any of his work. That is what I believed until I investigated Mr. Ball and learned that we’ve got a long history together thru his writing, directing and my viewing of his various works. Ball wrote “American Beauty ” which is an Oscar winning film and he was one of minds behind another hit HBO show, “6 Feet Under. ”

My dependence on “True Blood ” happened fast and was nearly instantaneous. I was one of those people who had completely ignored the show the 1st season and just happened to catch a marathon and as they say “the rest is history. ”

Months before I saw the show my cousin mentioned it to me and explained the story ; she then raved about the show. My speedy thought was “I am not jumping on this whole vampire craze going on now. ” I listened but thought “this all sounds so ridiculous and ridiculous no way will I have an interest in this show. ” “manmade blood ” come on, really?

It’s months later on I am home sick, I have watched the four seasons of “House ” that I own more times than I care to confess. It was to the point at which I was quoting House’s acerbic comments in my sleep. I decided it was time to tune up into something else so I gave “True Blood ” a try.

From the moment, the couple come speeding down the line engaging in some pretty naughty behaviour stopping curtly to go in of a convenience store advertising that they sell True Blood, you are hooked. You have no choice but to keep voyeuristically following the young couple. The two obnoxiously go in and talk with the clerk about True Blood and vampires in New Orleans.

The Top 10 Most Well Liked Vampires And True Blood

Friday, April 9th, 2010

The top ten are :

10. Angel from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series, and later his very own spinoff series Angel.

9. Felipe De Castro from the Sookie Stackhouse / True Blood book and TV series.

8. Lara from the Dresden Files book and television series.

7. Dracula from the 1897 novel and countless film and TV renditions.

6. Spike from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series.

5. Lilith from traditional vampire lore.

4. Nosferatu, first appearing in the 1922 motion picture of the same name, an adaption of Dracula.

3. Bill from the Sookie Stackhouse / True Blood book and television series.

2. Alice from the Twilight series of books and flicks.

…And the most popular vampire online is no surprise…

1. Edward from the Twilight series of books and movies.

I compiled this list be hunting for the word Vampire + the series name + the vampire name on numerous search websites. This guaranteed that I was indeed getting results for a particular vampire from a particular series. The vampire’s renown was judged by the total number of pages found for them. So , for instance to rank Edward from Twilight I searched for “Vampire Twilight Edward”, which had millions of pages.

In part to prevent The Twilight Series from absolutely overpowering this list I only authorized any one series up to 2 spots on this list. The most well liked vampires from Twilight were ( in order ) Edward, Alice, Jane, Victoria, Jasper, Laurent, Marcus, Carlisle, Rosalie, Esme, James, Aro, and Demetri. True Blood also had too many vamps on the list. The entire True Blood list ( in order ) is Bill, Felipe de Castro, Eric, Jessica, and Gdric.

The vampires who didn’t make the cut were Selene from subculture, Darren Shan, Vlad the Impaler from the 14th century, Thomas from the Dresden Files, Lestat from Anne Rice, Jean-Claude from Anita Blake, Lewis from Anne Rice, Count von Count from Sesame Street, Elizabeth Bathory from the 15th century, and Count Chocula.

Review Of Episode 1 Of Hbo’s True Blood

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

HBO’s vampire series “True Blood ” started yesterday evening with it’s premier episode “unusual Love”. The episode is the series pilot where a waitress as a local New Orleans bar meets a vampire named Bill, and from there a complex relationship starts. So what did I like to think of the first episode of the show?

Do I believe it has legs? All those questions will be answered soon enough within this review. But for now, let me tell you what I did and did not like about it, starting off with the “likes ” first. I did like the gothic look to it, which is completely predicted and standard considering it’s filmed in Louisiana, the deep south.

If you are familiar with 2005′s releases “The Skeleton Key ” with Kate Hudson, and “Venom ” with Agnes Bruckner, then you already know the landscape of the series visually. Another like of mine was Anna Paquin’s character Sookie…well…at least halfly.

Paquin plays the task of a southern barmaid very well, and her look is right for the role and the show overall. I also appreciated the attempt at adding some variety to the show with two black main characters, one of the standouts being Sookie’s best friend Tara Thorton, played by Rutina Wesley.

Although in most shows or series filmed in New Orleans, the casting directors are quick to represent the right racial makeup of the city, unlike “Seinfeld ” which managed to get thru an entire eight seasons without representing the extreme variety of midtown New York.

The character was initially supposed to be played by Brooke Kerr ( Whitney from Passions ), but I felt Wesley was more authentic in look and perspective. I also liked the opening scene of the first episode, which had a young couple going into a corner store and getting into an oral confrontation with the store clerk posing as a vampire, and a real vampire / redneck.
